Application of Nonlinear Mixed-Effects Modeling Approach in Tree Height Prediction

چکیده
A nonlinear mixed-effects modeling approach was used to model the individual tree height–diameter relationship based on Chapman-Richards function for dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii. Rupr.) plantations in northeastern China. The study involved the estimation of fixed and random parameters, as well as procedures for determining random effects variance-covariance matrices to reduce the number of the parameters in the model. The mixed-effects model provided better model fitting and more precise estimations than the fixed-effects model. Techniques for calibrating the height-diameter model for a particular plot of interest were also explored. The greatest reductions in bias and root mean square error (RMSE) were obtained when comparing the calibration from one randomly selected tree with the calibration from two randomly selected trees. Substantial reductions were obtained with the inclusion of two randomly selected trees, which could reduce the bias and RMSE of the predictions by almost 73% and 63%, respectively. An important characteristic of mixed-effects models is that they permit both mean response prediction and calibrated prediction. The fixedeffects parameters alone can be used to obtain the mean response prediction. More accurate estimates can be obtained by calibration for individual prediction.

Modeling Individual-Tree Height Prediction for Semi-Evergreen Forest: MultilevelLinear Mixed Effect Model Approach
Individual-tree height models were developed for dipterocarpaceae and nondiptoracarpaceaetree family for semi-evergreen forest in Seam Reap, Cambodia. Tree variables data were collected from long term permanent sample plots for all species. The models were first fitted using multiple linear regressions since it is the most commonly used statistical method in forest modeling. The models then wer...
متن کاملModeling and Prediction of Forest Growth Variables Based on Multilevel Nonlinear Mixed Models
In this article, we describe estimation and prediction methods for nonlinear modeling of forest growth variables that are subject to nested sources of variability. The multilevel nonlinear mixedeffects models that we consider are useful for a variety of forestry applications, but we concentrate on the problem of estimating, and making projections from, growth curves for tree height based on lon...

Height–diameter relationships based on stand characteristics (trees/ha, basal area, and dominant stand height) were investigated for balsam fir, balsam poplar, black spruce, jack pine, red pine, trembling aspen, white birch, and white spruce using data from permanent growth study plots in northern Ontario, Canada. Approximately half the data were used to estimate model parameters with the rest ...

A systematic evaluation of nonlinear mixed-effect taper models for volume prediction was performed. Of 21 taper equations with fewer than 5 parameters each, the best 4-parameter fixed-effect model according to fitting statistics was then modified by comparing its values for the parameters total height (H), diameter at breast height (DBH), and aboveground height (h) to modeling data. Seven alter...
